If you have traveled to warmer climate resorts you may have noticed something different about hotel rooms. In colder climates you can pretty well be sure that the floors are covered with carpets, except in the bathroom. But in warmer climates the floors are usually tile throughout. Why is that? For a number of reasons. In many countries, such as Mexico, tile is part of the historical architecture of the region. Tile can also be cooler than carpet. In warm weather, carpets can become home to all manner of nasty bugs. And carpets are harder to keep clean when guests are walking in and out of the room often in bar feet covered with lotion and sand.

So why is this fact important to travelers? During the day most guest in warm climate resorts are walking around in bare feet, flip flops or runners. But in the evening many guests like to dress for dinner, or for the disco and out come those spike heels. Ladies, while you’re finishing your hair, putting on your makeup and slithering into your sexiest dress, those heals are sounding like a cross between a machine gun and a woodpecker to the person below you. That may not be too bad at seven o’clock in the evening when the guests below you may not be in their room, or may have the television on, but when you get back from the disco at three in the morning those high heels sound like howitzers. Also remember a lot of guest lay down in the early evening for a siesta before hitting the dining room and disco, so when you’re getting primped up, the people below you could be sleeping.

So here’s the tip. Wait until you are literally walking out the door of your room to put on those spikes, and when you come back to your room, take them off in the entrance way. Believe me, the people in the room below you will love you for it.
