Many of you have heard of or have been following the saga of Sea Mountain Inn in Desert Hot Springs, California. During “sweeps” week, the local television station, KESQ, did what they called an “undercover” report on Sea Mountain Inn. They sent in a young bible punching zealot reporter who apparently exposed Sea Mountain Inn as a “sex spa.” In fact, during the entire on-air segment the reporter, Mike Daniels, continued to refer to the resort as the Sea Mountain Sex Spa. Perhaps he knows something we don’t, because we’re not even sure exactly what a “sex spa” is! There was an offbeat movie released in 2003 called the Sex Spa, but I don’t think that’s the comparison he was trying to make.
Taking tabloid journalism to a new height, Mike Daniels, super sleuth of KESQ, pretending to be a potential customer (we’re wondering if he was wearing a trench coat), got an employee of the resort to admit that the resort serves complimentary margaritas and wine, and that the resort has a massage room that turns into a playroom at night. Apparently, according to Mike Daniels, you need a liquor license to serve your customers a free cocktail. Maybe you do and maybe you don’t, but if you do, it’s a stupid ass law (probably passed by one of Mike Daniel’s bible punching relatives), and if you do, really, is this the most important event in Desert Hot Springs to report on? Maybe the feature of the story should be about our stupid liquor laws that keep a business owner from pouring a free drink for a customer.
As for the sex part, so what’s the big deal? Let’s see—people go to a hotel or resort, sit in the pool, eat and drink, listen to music, and have sex. Oh, so sex doesn’t happen in every hotel, motel and resort in the country? People take their lovers to hotels to have sex and people on vacation with their lovers stay in hotels and have sex, and even moms and dads with families have sex in hotels when the kids aren’t looking. If you want to stop sex going on in hotels, you’d have to close down every hotel in the country! But according to Mike Daniels, sex in hotels is illegal.
Mike Daniels goes on to report that the city will be doing a full review of the business, whatever that means. Fortunately, saner heads have prevailed. City Manager for the City of Desert Hot Springs, Rick Daniels (no relation—and I’m sure he’s glad of it) has reviewed the city’s bylaws and codes, and has assured us that Sea Mountain Inn is in complete compliance with all city codes, and that he is not concerned about what customers of Sea Mountain Inn may do, or not do, in the privacy of the resort. Sea Mountain Inn will stay in business and be available for all of us to enjoy. Apparently KESQ’s star reporting is barking up the wrong tree (perhaps Sea Mountain Inn should offer the reporter a free pass—he might actually have a good time).

As for Sea Mountain Inn, check out the report we did on the resort a number of months back. It’s a great resort and after this problem, I’m sure it could use some business. As for Desert Hot Springs—kudos to you. Finally a city government that thinks going after gang members, drug dealers and car thieves is more important than running out the morality police trying to control everyone’ sex lives. If you have a chance, send Rick Daniels the City Manager a thank you. His email address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. And if you get out in the area, drop in to one of their local establishments and spend some money. Like all communities today I am sure they could use the tax dollars.
As for Mike Daniels the reporter, please grow up. You may not like what some people do in private. That’s life. I probably don’t like a lot of things you do in private. But being in the nude and having sex are healthy natural activities that go on between consenting adults, whether it’s in their bedroom, their living room or a hotel. We live in America. America is supposed to stand for freedom. That doesn’t mean freedom for some, it means freedom for all. You’ve got the power of the media behind you. Why not use it to do some real good? I’m sure your audience would appreciate it.
