Our final report on Costa Rica takes us back to San Jose, the nation’s capital city. This city of 350,000 is the largest city in Costa Rica, and the surrounding metropolitan area holds a population of 1.6 million, almost 40% of the nation’s total population of 4.1 million people, in a country of 20,000 square miles. Now you know why so much of Costa Rica is still virgin rain forest.
Costa Rica is a city in transition. It still has tin roof shacks along the river, but also contains many middle class and upper middle class neighborhoods. Thanks to the Chinese it is getting a brand new major sports arena, and while the city has not been overtaken by a building boom, as in Panama City, there is a pleasing mix of new and old buildings, including historical sites. Downtown San Jose is a vibrant shopping district by day, although somewhat deserted at night.
We were lucky enough to have Rico and his wonderful fiancé as our guides. Rico is of Italian origin and after a stint in Canada, ended up in Costa Rica. His fiancé is from Nicaragua. Rico runs a limousine and cell phone rental company, and also publishes a daily new journal called Inside Costa Rica. He also runs a web community for Costa Rican swingers (swingersdatebox.com) . Check them out.
Our first club visit in San Jose was to High Dreams. If you plan to go to this club, you definitely need a local to take you, because finding it would be a huge challenge. It’s about a forty minute drive outside of the city, nestled amongst a couple of small villages and coffee bean plantations. And even though it’s hard to find, it’s a great location that isolated and private. The club is still under construction but the area that is finished, is superb. We drove into the parking lot, walked to the main building, a two level structure with a large open air deck, and then down the stairs to the facilities below.
Walking into High Dreams is like walking into an upscale spa. After checking in, we were given a locker key, bathrobe, towel and spa slippers to wear. We changed, then headed to the large hot tub to relax. Next to the hot tub are a couple of play areas, a sauna, showers and a message room. There are also couches for relaxing and cooling down after the hot tub. The club has a bar and dance area next to the hot tub, and they serve alcohol. In addition, you can get beverage service while sitting in the hot tub. The atmosphere was very relaxed, and the place was spotless.
Future plans for the club include more play areas, an outdoor sitting deck and eating area, and even a small hotel so patrons don’t have to drive back to the city after an evening of partying and playing. If you get to San Jose, definitely take the time to visit High Dreams.
Our next club visit was to Club Swinger Pareja Total. This club is located in the heart of San Jose, walking distance to hotels, restaurants, the shopping district, and the famous Costa Rica escort bar Blue Marlin at the Hotel del Rey, or the next door venue that caters to the same crowd, the Key Largo. We were told the Key Largo was established by a gay gentleman who was in love with Humphrey Bogart, and apparently the bar is filled with Bogart movie memorabilia.
Pareja Total is located in an historic building which gives the club a certain charm. The night we were there it was packed—wall to wall half naked bodies on the dance floor moving to cool Latin influenced vibes. Like High Dreams, they serve alcohol, which is a nice change from what we find in most American clubs. Like many old buildings, the layout was an afterthought, so the place is broken up into small nooks and crannies—a playroom here, a Jacuzzi tub there, and so on. When we arrive almost everyone was on the dance floor, but within an hour so, the dance floor was deserted and the beds, couches and Jacuzzi were full of action. The only negative we have about Pareja Total was the ventilation. Costa Rica hasn’t caught up with the US on smoking laws, and it seems almost everyone in Costa Rica at this club was smoking. Nevertheless, we had a great time at Pareja Total, and would certainly suggest you visit if you get to San Jose.
If you’re looking for a place to stay in San Jose, definitely check out the Sportsman Lodge Hotel. This boutique hotel, right down the street from Pareja Total, and also within walking distance of all the downtown San Jose attractions, has character like most hotels only dream about. Their main bar and restaurant is an open air affair reminiscent of the bars you’d read about in a Graham Green novel. Plenty of wood, English pub charm, fans, a little dark, and winds from the open balconies. The bar is a place to people watch. You’ll find local prostitutes looking for business, and prospective clients, business suited men working deals over lunch and drinks, tourists and an assortment of interesting characters who all seem to have an interesting story to tell. If you like a bar with character, you’ll love this one.
If you do get to Costa Rica, take some time to explore a little of San Jose and its swinger scene.
