We’re getting lots of calls and emails from our customers traveling to Jamaica, asking about Club Mobay. A number of resorts are promoting Club Mobay, as are some travel agents. If you go on Trip Advisor, the comments and reports are confusing, so we thought we could help clarify the Club Mobay service, so you can determine if it’s right for you.
Club Mobay, serving the air travelers at Montego Bay Airport, is more than just an airport lounge. It’s a service that helps travelers navigate the sometimes challenging aspects of international travel. To the seasoned traveler who’s been to 50 countries, spent five hours clearing immigration lines, had bags torn apart from inspections, been grilled by gun-toting border control officers, and is happy sitting on the floor in a dirty airport for hours waiting on a flight, Club Mobay is probably not something you need. If you’re traveling with your backpack and staying in a shack on the beach, you’re sole objective being to smoke as much Jamaican weed as you can during your week in Jamaica, you probably don’t need Club Mobay. But for many of us, it’s an added convenience when we’re on vacation, and spending a few more dollars to be comfortable and to eliminate confusion and problems is well worth the money.
Club Mobay offers two services—arrival and departure. With the arrival service, a Club Mobay staff member meets you, holding a sign with your name on it, as you exit the plane and enter the immigration area. They will assist you in completing any immigration paperwork, escort you through the immigration line (before others who might be waiting) and assist you in collecting your luggage. Once you leave immigration, you’re escorted to the Club Mobay arrival lounge, where you can relax while the greeter tracks down, or arranges for, your transportation.
What’s the benefit? If you’ve been traveling a long distance, you’re tired, you don’t want to stand in long lines (immigration lines vary at every airport—one day you wait ten or fifteen minutes, the next time it could be an hour and a half), you don’t want to deal with all the hawkers trying to sell you transportation and timeshares once you get through immigration, and you don’t want to have to search around for that bus driver or shuttle that is supposed to meet you, it’s worth it. The arrival service is $50 per person.
The second service is departure service. After checking in your bags, you proceed to the Club Mobay kiosk. A Club Mobay staff member escorts you to the front of the security line (again, lines vary in length depending upon the day of the week, time of the day, and season you are traveling). Once you’ve cleared security, you will be escorted to the Club Mobay departure lounge. (Our Club Mobay escort actually helped us put our carry-on bags and other gear through the x-ray machines). The Club Mobay is probably larger than most airport club lounges, and we think classier than most.
The Club Mobay departure lounge is 10,000 square feet of space to eat, drink, catch up on business, shower, or just relax while you wait for your plane. The lounge offers drinks, food, internet access, TVs, showers, restrooms, a business center, and an interesting Jamaican cultural experience. We learned more about the history, art and people of Jamaica in a couple of hours at Club Mobay, than all of our trips to Jamaica. (Did you know that Jamaicans call their young children ‘pickneys’?) There are three different rooms, so if one is too noisy or busy, you can find another place where things are quieter. The lounge also has monitors so you can check your flight status, and all departures are announced. The departure service is $30 per person.
What’s the benefit? You cut through the security line and have a nice lounge to relax in while waiting for your plane. You can relax in comfortable furniture and enjoy free drinks, free food, (don’t expect a Las Vegas buffet—it’s snacks, but their patties are some of the best we’ve eaten), internet access, a clean bathroom and, if you’re interested in Jamaican culture, wall exhibits to keep you occupied.
Is it worth the money? Our customers headed to Jamaica are on vacation. Many have paid $3,000 to $5,000 for their air tickets and accommodation. They want to have a good time, and don’t want to be stressed, wait in lines, encounter problems or be hassled. We think spending an extra $30 - $80 per person to be greeted by a friendly face, cut the lines, have a place to wait, get some free food and drinks, have nice clean bathrooms, and be comfortable while traveling, is worth it. Of course, if you’re Mr. Seasoned Traveler or Mr. Backpacker, you can always sit on the floor in the main terminal with your computer plugged into a charging station!
One last comment. When we used Club Mobay, every single person we met, from the greeter, to the staff in the kiosks, the staff at the front desk, the servers, and the bartender where helpful, friendly, and made us feel like our business was appreciated.
