What Exactly Are Lifestyle or Swingers Vacations?
May travelers wonder about lifestyle vacations and resorts. Some of the questions revolve around what to expect, and what sort of people go to these resorts. These are very legitimate questions and if you are going to visit a “lifestyle” resort or a “lifestyle friendly” resort, you should understand something about these resorts in advance. In this article we will use the term lifestyle resort to refer to any resort that is adults-only and that caters to sexually open minded travelers.
A popular misconception is that lifestyle resorts are visited primarily by wild swingers, and one can expect orgies with dozens of naked bodies having sex for hours, and everyone swapping partners. In fact, traditional swingers may only represent a fraction of the guests at lifestyle resorts, and most sexual activity will be conducted behind closed doors.
So what do you find at lifestyle resorts? People at lifestyle resorts vary in age group from adults in their twenties to adults in their seventies. The age of the crowd very often depends on resort ambience and the time of year. As with resorts that cater to the general population at large, some resorts are more upscale and laid back (Desire Cancun) and other resorts are more budget conscious and cater to a partying crowd (Hedonism II). Also, most lifestyle resorts have high season and low season, and in low season you will find more budget conscious travelers. Also in low season you will find those travelers who prefer a resort when it is less crowded.
Many clubs, associations and travel companies sponsor group tours to lifestyle resorts, so the people at a given resort may be swayed by the demographics of that particular club or group. It is a good idea when visiting a lifestyle resort to find out a little bit about what groups, if any, might be going when you are planning to travel. You can find out what groups are going to a resort by checking the resort’s website, checking with your favorite on-line community (such as Kasidie) or checking with your favorite travel agent (such as Dream Pleasure Tours).
The people who visit lifestyle resorts come from all walks of life. On a recent trip to one well known lifestyle resort we met an attorney, a retired business man, a building contractor, and someone in the recycling business. We also met people from Canada, the US, Mexico, Poland, Russia, and Germany.
So what’s different about a lifestyle resort? In writing this article I am assuming that the reader knows something about vacation resorts so I will focus on the differences between a lifestyle resort, and a regular resort. Lifestyle resorts are typically adults only and allow nudity or partial nudity, particularly around the pools, beaches, hot tubs and recreation areas. The amount of nudity may be governed by resort policy or municipal ordinances. But remember the words “clothing optional.” Lifestyle resorts allow you to make the choice, unlike some nudist resorts that require you to be unclothed.
Lifestyle resorts are designed for people who are sexually open minded. Visitors include swingers or members of the lifestyle, voyeurs, exhibitionists, nudists, people who are curious and people who enjoy PDA (public displays of affection). Some guest are looking to hook up with other guests for sexual activity, others are just looking for a place to suntan naked or a place to wear that sexy see-through dress on the dance floor (that will get you kicked out of most clubs in America due to state liquor board codes.)
The key to lifestyle resorts is an open attitude to sex and the naked human body. If you’re not interested in participating in sexual activities with other guests or with other guests present, you don’t have too. Also, overt sexual acts, if they occur at all, usually occur in specific locations, or late at night, thus can be easily avoided. Typically guests at these resorts are very respectful of individual limits and standard. On the other hand, guests at these resorts are not judgmental. What you do is your business, and what they do is their business. So whether it be really dirty dancing on the disco floor, a frisky massage on a chez lounge by the pool, or an open sexual act in the hot tub, if it’s not for you, don’t watch and don’t participate.
One thing about lifestyle resorts is that most visitors are very open to meeting other people. Unlike some resorts where you can stay a week and barely get to know anyone else, lifestyle resort visitors are typically eager to meet new people, even if it is not for mutual sexual gratification. The first night you may dine by yourself, but by your last night, with very little effort, you’ll probably have made a host of new, and sometimes lasting, friends.
The one thing to expect is that you and your partner will enjoy a heightened sense of the sensuality. I have been told many times that going to a lifestyle resort brought passion and romance back into a relationship. I have also had lifestyle vacations described to me as fulfilling, spiritual, energizing, invigorating, and life changing. The poet Kahlil Gibran wrote “And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter and the sharing of pleasures.” I suggest you share the pleasure of a lifestyle vacation with someone you love, and soon.
