We are just back from our July 4th week at Desire Resort and Spa on the Riviera Maya in Mexico. We know that most of you are already familiar with Desire, but sometimes revisiting the familiar is a worthwhile exercise. So here is some new information on Desire, some updates and some information on our trip.
The Players Club out of Texas joined us for this trip, and with Players Club and other guests, we had close to 50 couples at the resort. Needless to say we all had a great time. The best part was the number of repeat customers on the trip, many of whom we now call good friends. It was especially nice to see Tom of Players Club back in the thick of things. For those of you who don’t know, just before the trip in 2010 Tom had to undergo a heart transplant and couldn’t make the trip. Thankfully the operation went well. Tom has spent a year recuperating, and today he is looking great and back to being a gracious and charming host to all of the couples who traveled on this trip.
Desire put on a private meet and greet for us on Sunday in the disco and the restaurant staff outdid themselves. They turned the disco stage into an elevated appetizer station, complete with a huge palm tree as the centerpiece, surrounded by cascading trays of fruits, pastries and other scrumptious finger food. The general manager of Desire was nice enough to say a few words to our guests, and pay tribute to his fine staff who deliver day in and day out. As we said to our guests, we are always getting asked, “What other resorts are like Desire?” And we always answer, “There are no other resorts like Desire. It is truly a unique resort and a vacation experience unlike any you will find anywhere else.”
In appreciation of Tom and in honor of his great recovery, we hosted a private lobster dinner for Tom and and his lovely wife Bonnie in the gazebo right by the ocean. It couldn’t have been a better evening. A light breeze coming off of the Caribbean, a couple of great bottles of wine, lobster bisque and lobster dinner, and wonderful service from Africa (no, not the country—Africa is one of the staff members at Desire and she does a wonderful job). It was an exceptional evening.
We missed all of the action, but on July 4th Tom held a zucchini BJ contest for the ladies and a cherry pie eating contest for the guys, complete with whipped cream and maraschino cherries. Apparently the cherry pie eating contest was so popular a number of guys didn’t want to stop (and their partners didn’t want them to either). Dream Pleasure Tours gave away two $100 certificates to the winners, good towards the next Players Club vacation to the winners.
We continue to get great feedback on Desire’s remodeled disco and playrooms. Every night we were there the disco was packed, and the playroom had plenty of action. Of course, one of the best places to be after dark is upstairs in the rooftop Jacuzzi pool, and this year was no exception. The day beds (or would you call them night beds?) around the Jacuzzi pool were well used!
We’ve heard a number of people express concern about the beach at Desire. Due to tides shift and a change in the currents, the beach area was undergoing some erosion. Some claimed that in a couple of years there would be no beach left. Well, that rumor is entirely false. The resort put a sandbag barrier wall just beyond the roped off swimming area, and that barrier has caused the sandy beach to rebuild itself. Apparently once the border was in place, the beach came back within a couple of months, and continues to grow with more sand and more beach area. That's great news for all of you beach lovers!
While the food at Desire has always been great, it’s nice to see a new menu at the Asian restaurant. We tried a number of new dishes, including a gado gado Indonesian salad and a couple of new curries. We encourage Desire to keep experimenting and trying new menu items because we know our guests appreciate it. We certainly did.
It’s also really nice to see such an international crowd at Desire. We met some great people from Germany, the Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Argentina. We also met a customer from the US who said they were very concerned about making their reservation with us. Apparently we had rooms available when the resort didn’t. They were worried that maybe it was some sort of scam. Well, of course it wasn’t a scam; the reason we have rooms when the resort doesn’t is that we take contracts for blocks of rooms throughout the year to make sure our customers get into the resort. We are one of the largest resellers of Desire vacations and we send more and more people to the resort every year. And, we provide great service and love our customers!
A final note on Desire. We just cannot say enough about all of the great staff. They are wonderful-- from the bellmen, to the front desk staff, to the entertainment crew, to the chefs and servers, to the bartenders and to everyone else we may have left out. They do a tremendous job and we really appreciate all of their efforts to make sure our guests have a great vacation experience.
