It seems that much of what is written and broadcast in the news isn't really news, but is designed to garner reactions from the readers or listeners, good or bad. A recent example is this report on CBS Channel 13 in Sacramento's website titled "Nudist Resort Sees Boost In Business As Temperatures Rise." There really is no story. Maybe it's just free advertising for a nudist resort, or maybe it’s just that talking about people being nude gets viewer/reader responses. Anyway, the comments made by readers on Channel 13's website are even more interesting than the article itself, and continue to demonstrate the polarizing views on the nude body in the United States. Read the article, then some of the comments below.
WILTON (CBS13) – Temperatures rising means business is booming at a place where folks are letting it all hang out.
“I tell you Dave, if you have friends who live in a nudist colony, tonight wouldn’t be a bad night to visit,” I said. It was that comment to Dave Bender during Wednesday night’s broadcast that sparked an email from a nice lady.
Kitty told CBS13 the naked truth. “It’s a nudist resort, not a colony, silly. And business, thanks to the area’s heat wave, has never been better,” wrote Kitty.
CBS13 ventured out to Wilton to Laguna Del Sol on, yes, Rawhide Lane to see how these sun-drenched skinny dippers are soaking in the summer sizzler.
“Obviously everybody wants to wear as little as possible when it’s hot. It’s too hot to mow the lawn, and you see people going where there’s water. And this is just a great place to go,” said Suzanne Schell, a visitor.
Suzanne and her hubby, Wayne, have been urging people to come out of their shell for years, but fighting through the stigma of being a nudist hasn’t been easy. We asked Wayne what is the biggest misconception about nudists. He replied, “I think they think it’s a sexually oriented recreation, and it’s not.”
The Schells call this 250-acre resort family-friendly; and even though they’re nude, dude, no shenanigans are allowed. It’s just good clean fun. “It’s a recreation like any other campground or resort. We have archery here; pickle ball is really popular right now; water volleyball,” said Wayne.
Archery might be kind of dangerous. Their sense of humor was easy to find. Where would they hide it?
Lisa Flannery isn’t hiding anything. She’s one of 80 full-time residents of Laguna Del Sol and wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s absolutely heaven, every day. When you come in here to come home, all your stress is left at the gate,” said Flannery.
Others say being here fuels their “fountain of youth.” From hopping on a bike to enjoying the scenery to soaking in the pool, it got us thinking, “Who was really the fool on this 100-plus degree day?”
“I know you’re definitely hot. It’s time for a swim,” said Lisa.
No, I didn’t jump in, but I stand corrected. This is a resort and the people are as friendly as they are free.
If you’re ready to have a ball and come out to Laguna Del Sol, there is a day rate. Everyone’s welcome, and don’t worry about what to wear. And, this boost in business comes during a perfect week. That’s because it’s National Nude Recreation Week.
Random comments:
"Most people are in bad shape: rolls of fat, pasty white skin, wrinkles, skinny legs, flat butts, etc. Why on EARTH would I want to see them naked?"
"Hopping on a bike, eh? Apparently there's not much danger of anything getting caught in the bicycle chain."
"How sad that you have such a poor self image and are so concerned about what others look like. How do you ever manage to leave your house and interact with other people without being turned off and horrified since you dislike the different shapes of people so much?"
"Truly disgusting.. and I would venture to guess that all these "nudists" either look like the Sta-Puft Marshmallow man, or an old withered piece of beef jerky."
"I went with my husband the first time to check it out. As I went on the tour I realized we would join. Age, size, and looks really don't matter. It's a great place with wonderful people. I feel safer here than I do in most Sacramento neighborhoods where I am fully clothed."
"We have fantasy fest here in Key West. Lots of folks from every age group barely legal to your grandma are walking the streets of the fantasy zone naked drunk and having a blast! Hell we got a bar called Garden of Eden you can hang nude in year round. what’s wrong with it?"
"Nothing worse than a clammy wet swimsuit. God meant for people to swim nude."
"John Quincy Adams took a daily skinny-dip in the Potomac (weather permitting) during his presidency."
"The problem with nudist resorts/beaches is that they are full of old, ugly people. There's never any hot women at them."
"Going around in your Birthday suit is a sin... Grow up."
And one final word from the owner of the resort: "Reading all these comments makes me feel very lucky to be a nudist and the owner of Laguna del Sol. We tend to be much less judgmental than a lot of other people. Yes, we are all ages, and all sizes and body types - so what? I have yet to see a swimsuit that can make a little extra weight "disappear". Your birthday suit is always the right size, never goes out of style and is the most comfortable one you will ever own. Visitors to nudist and clothing-optional resorts like Laguna del Sol get to know people by what's inside and not by the labels they wear on the outside. The lack of status consciousness is refreshing. We have the attitude that our bodies are not something to be ashamed of and hidden at all times. After all, we have to live with them every day, so why not make the best of it and enjoy life while we can? Thanks Channel 13 for a realistic portrayal of our beautiful resort!"
The really interesting part of this article is the attacks by the anti-nudists, on the nudists, and the protests by the nudists how the anti-nudists are so judgmental and prejudiced. Yet many of these nudists are equally judgmental and prejudiced against swingers, lifestylers and other sexually open minded people. Somehow we all seem to think our road is the best road, when in reality there are many paths to happiness and self-fulfillment. Why can't we let others follow their own path?
