April 11, 2013 - Hi from on-board the Brilliance of the Seas as we anchor in St. Kitts for another day of fun in the sun, adventure and playing with old friends and new ones. For those of you who’ve been on some of the other Couples Cruises swingers and lifestyle cruises, this cruise is different. It is the first Couples Cruise not departing from a US port. That gave most of us the opportunity to spend time in Puerto Rico, and if you’ve never been to Puerto Rico, consider visiting. We found Puerto Rico wonderful and the people charming and helpful. The US influence on the Caribbean Island is obvious. Compared to the many islands we have visited so far, Puerto Rico is modern, well-maintained and clearly more affluent, yet still retains that Caribbean Island charm.
After a day of picking up supplies at a Walmart close to our hotel (we stocked up on wine and snacks for the Dream Pleasure Tours Hospitality Suite—(be warned, wine runs about 30% more than in Los Angeles) it was off to Senor Frog’s for the main pre-cruise party. As you can imagine, the place was packed wall-to-wall with a festive crowd the likes of which we imagine Senor Frog’s has not seen before. After a few hours of meeting many of our old friends and reconnecting, we headed off to find someplace to eat dinner.
Senor Frog’s is in Old Town San Juan, an historical district of narrow streets and old buildings, occupied by shops, bars and restaurants, and we figured a great place to find something different, and we found it. Exploring down Fortaleza Street we discovered Tantra, an Indian fusion restaurant. A peek inside showed a mix of people, but none looked like typical cruise tourists, and the place was busy. We took that as a sign the food would be good, and it was. For those of you familiar with typical Indian food, this place was different. How about curried duck tacos? We ordered them, and they were delicious. We also had a vegetable curry that had a wonderful sauce, but the vegetables were crisp, more like a Chinese stir fry. Another hit. With a fabulous meal under our belts it was back to the hotel.
Saturday morning we packed up our luggage and headed to the cruise ship. We’d been told that every passenger was allowed to bring on a bottle of wine, and that worked perfectly, as we all carried on wine that helped build up our wine cellar for the Dream Pleasure Tours Hospitality Suite. Our first Meet and Greet on board was at 6:00 in the Odyssey Lounge, and about half of the 200 plus Dream Pleasure Tours customers on board showed up. We handed out bags with Dream Pleasure Tours hats, hotel room key holders, shag bags and other goodies, and got to meet up with more of our customers, new and old. Then, it was off to enjoy the ships activities and the playrooms.
Sunday was a day at sea and Dream Pleasure Tours hosted three events. First, we hosted a Meet and Greet in the Casino Bar at noon, and caught up with a few more customers we missed the previous day (drinks on the house for the first five couples to arrive!). Later in the day Dream Pleasure tours hosted a Cigar 101 class. And we topped the day off with a reception in our suite from five to seven, with wine compliments of Dream Pleasure Tours. Well, you know that even a suite on a cruise ship is small but we managed to pack in 25 to 30 couples, and catch up with even more of our friends. For those of you who don’t travel with us regularly, the Dream Pleasure Tours Hospitality Suite has become quite the place to hang out and meet people. After the Meet and Greet we had dinner and partied till the wee hours.
Monday morning we arrived in Curacao. A number of cruisers headed off to Allegra, a legal brothel and club that claims to have 150 ladies available for their guests’ pleasure. We didn’t go but the report back from those who did was that there was plenty of fun and action for everyone. The one recommendation was to go later in the day, because some guests arrived at 11:00 in the morning, and apparently that was a little earlier for many of the ladies. We walked around the main city of Willemstad, with its shops, pontoon bridge and floating market. It was a combination of interesting local shops, other shops plying the typical tourist souvenirs, and designer outlets. After walking around the city it was time for lunch and we hit the jackpot again. A little off the beaten path we discovered De Ruyter Café. This hole-in-the-wall features food from Suriname. For those of you who are not history buffs, Suriname was a Dutch colony in South Asia, and Curacao was a Dutch colony in the Caribbean, and 300 years of Dutch and Asians mixing has produced an amazing cuisine. The food was tremendous, and we topped it off with a drink made of fresh ginger that was tangy, spicy and very refreshing. The Soto soup was also amazingly great. Then it was back to the ship.
Tuesday we arrived early in Aruba, only 90 nautical miles from Curacao. This day we decided to hire a taxi for an island tour. The island is only 19 miles long and 9 miles wide so in three hours we went from one end to another. Our driver showed us the brothel district in St. Nicolas, some famous rock formations, a 400 year old church, the California light house and a lot of the local architecture. We were amazed that almost every grocery store we saw (and there were lots) had a Chinese name on it, and we stopped in at the Hong Kong Super Market to check out the hot sauces. The woman working the cash register was from Guangzhou and as it turns out, the Chinese control the grocery trade in Aruba. After our tour it was again time for lunch so we found a small Indian restaurant called the Taj Mahal which was reasonably priced, in the main city of Oranjestad. The dishes had the same names as those in Los Angeles, but each was prepared slightly differently, and in our opinion, improvements on the typical Indian far we find at home. The food was fresh and tasty with just the right amount of spice. We left with bellies full. It was strange to be eating Indian food in Aruba but it was an adventure for us to see how different the cuisine would be in comparison to what we get In Los Angeles.
Wednesday was a day at sea and we had two Dream Pleasure Tours events planned. At noon we held a Meet and Greet in the Casino Bar with more of our guests arriving to say hello (and more free drinks!). Then later in day in the day we held another Dream Pleasure Tours reception in our Hospitality Suite. This time, however, we were overwhelmed with the turnout. The first guests arrived before five and the last left at almost eight o’clock. We figure more than 40 couples joined us for wine, including a number who were not our customers but heard about our Hospitality Suite from other travelers. The ship was headed north west and we were all able to watch the beautiful sunset off of the large balcony.
That evening we dined with customers in Chops, the ship’s premier steakhouse. Dinner was exquisite, the company superb. After dinner it was Mardi Gras night with dancing, parades and the sexiest Mardi Gras costumers you’ve ever seen, then more partying and playing.
This morning we arrived in St. Kitts and our adventure continues. We’ll have another report at the end of the cruise, but by now, you have to admit you wish you were with us.
